Brittany Maynard: Death with Dignity
Instructions
Do you like art? If so, what kind of art? If we think about it, we all like art in some shape or form. For some, art is a beautiful oil painting on canvas. To another, art is expressed through dance, while to another, it is expressed through one's fingers as one molds and shapes new objects made with clay. Did you know that written text can also be art? I would like all of you to be artists with the freedom to express yourselves in any way that you would like.

I agree with her decision to abbreviate the dying process by taking the aid-in-dying medication. Although some people say killing herself/himself is very selfish and bad, I think it is up to her/him to decide to stay alive or die. According to the article, she suffered from the terrible pain. It caused her to make this choice. In my experience, when I had a terrible stomach ache, I wished I could die. Of course, compared to my stomach ache, Brittany's pains were much more terrible. So I can understand why she chose this way. After this event, more people will choose the same way as her. If i were in her situation, I also would take the medication. By suffering from the pain, my family and friends would feel sorry for me. It would make me sadder. Therefore, I agree with the death with dignity.
ReplyDeleteInteresting point. Thank you for sharing!
DeleteI agree with what Brittany choose. Her cancer and her situation that she had only 6 months made her choice. However, she made 'bucket list' and she did that she wished. This means she didn't have any regret for her life. Therefore, she just choose to pass way by herself not by cancer. That was her life and her decision. Nobody can't force her to live and fight with cancer. Also, she chose peaceful death in her bedroom with her loved ones. She didn't frighten anyone or cause them any harm. However, I think it is bad for her to preannounce openly in facebook. This is because, many people can be affected by her suicide; hence, even some people who are very healthy can think about suicide very easily.
ReplyDeleteYour comment about her announcement on Facebook is interesting. Thank you for sharing!
DeleteI agree with Brittany’s decision. When she was diagnosed with the brain tumor, she was very sad. Everyone will be like this in such situation. After that, she suffered a lot, but she still wanted to live on the world. Even though she did a lot, it was cancer, and the cancer was killing her. As a terminally ill patient, she had the right to choose what kind of the life she wanted. Nobody would like to choose ending his or her own life except he or she was painful with the illness. Think about if you were in this situation, what you would like to choose? I prefer to end my life peaceful than to die painful.
ReplyDeleteInteresting point! So far, it seems like the previous three people have agreed with you. Thank you for sharing!
DeleteI think I did not agree with the decision she made before I read this article. However, after I finish this article, I feel her method may be a way for us to finish our lives. The reason for why she made this choice is that the cancer likely would kill her, and she was told that she only had six month with pain. I think I will think about death and what we should do when the death is coming. Actually, I do not know weather I will do the same thing because death methods are too important for us that we should spend a lot of time to choose.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is true. I believe she studied it a lot and finally came to this decision. What do you think? Do you think you will choose the same?
DeleteI agree with her because she didn’t have any hops for living long time. All people have many plans to do during their life and it’s very important for her to reach all goals. We can say that she was a little bit lucky person, because she aware that when her life is done!! She made a "bucket list" because she wanted to make herself satisfied that she bring all her goals to an end. If I was her, defiantly I did the same schedule as hers to complete and implement all my purposes.
ReplyDeleteIf I were she, I may make some decision. In this day and age, Even though the medical technology is more advanced than before, some terrible disease still cannot be cured. Many patients suffering for drugs day by day, include they families have to give up their own free time take care of them and cost huge of money to let them live longer. In addition, health people cannot know and experience how painfully cancer patient suffered in succession from them illness. I always thinking about why people would like to spend lots of money curing the patients, nevertheless they know the cancer cannot be cured. Brittany Maynard said “The thought that I can spare myself the physical and emotional lengthy pain of that, as well as my family, is a huge relief.” She does not want her families and friends live in horrible life as her, and she does not want to forget her beautiful moments with her husband when she would become worse.
ReplyDeleteIt is common that more and more people suffer because of some diseases such as cancer. Brittany had this disease although she was younger. She decided to die in Oregon State because it allows the death with dignity. Without a doubt, she felt by pain, sadness, and loneliness for years, but I am not agreeing with her decision. She killed herself, and cancer did not do that unlike what she said. According to death with dignity law and her decision, many people will do like what she did, and I call that is suicide. If I were her, I will not kill myself because I have strong faith. We believe that all illnesses which we faced were from the god and these illnesses will remove our sins and make us more pure.

I agree with Brittany's choice because I understand how she was. When we are under suffering, there is no means of everything how good we have. Also, she does not give up for the first time if I was in her shoes, I will set my “bucket list” too. However I can-not imagine that how awful the pain is so, I think I do not blame her by that choice. When I was in high-school, in Korea, there is a one woman who called “happy missionary” she seemed like happiest person in the world. However, she got a pancreatic cancer and it give her a horrible pain; therefore, about few months later, she was killed herself with her husband. It was shocking things to me. But in this case and Brittany’s case, regardless how they are happy or how strong mind she has, happy with pain is impossible. So no one except suffering same pain, have qualification to blame her. As a result, I think it was not a suicide by depression but protect her right from illness.
ReplyDeleteThat is a really hard decision ever that a person has to make. I cannot say anything else about this woman but brave. Just imagine how hard that is at the moment you say goodbye to your family to go to another country to live or study. But that just stays away from your family. It is not like you cannot see them anymore. Maynard’s decision is the way harder. She decided to stop her life. “I’m not killing me,” she said. “Cancer is killing me.” She gave a decision in order to stop a painful headache that she has to suffer every day. I cannot do that. Making that decision is just like prisoners under death penalty on the very last day, when they know that the death is waiting for them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with her decision. I think the suffering of the pain and the conscious of freedom and dignity causes her to make such a choice. Because as it said, Brittany suffered increasingly frequently and longer seizures, severe head and neck pain, those pain can drive every cancer patient crazy, they have to bear the pain of the chemotherapy at the last months of life in order to gain more time. But she has the different idea, she thinks that her life is controlled by her own, no one can make decision about her life including the disease. So she made such a decision. This decision is respectful, but as a consequence, it may hurt the one who loves her, her parent, her lover, they want to stay more time with her. If I were her, I may make the same decision, for I want to own my life, I don’t want to be tormented by the disease.
ReplyDeleteI agree with her decision. Everyone wants to live long time, but she could not live because she had severe illness. I think the reason why she made this decision is she already knew she would be dead. Therefore, she hoped to do something special like bucket list before she died although the bucket list she fulfilled could be short her life. If I were her, I would challenge to fulfill some bucket list during left life. The most important thing in my life is health. Living long time as healthy condition means we can do interesting something we want to do.
ReplyDeleteI agree with her decision. We have a right to decide about our life, so I think we can decide how we die by ourselves. Nobody can adverse. However, I cannot judge whether it is good that she chose to abbreviate the dying process by taking the aid-in-dying medication or not. If I were in her place, I would not know what to do or what to think. I cannot imagine. She seemed to suffer lots of pain. These made her choose to die by medication. She was diagnosed sick. It cannot be helped. However, there are many people who kill their selves even though they are not sick. In that situation, circumstance is different so I cannot agree to the dying by their decision.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with Brittany's choice. I think that she didn't die with dignity, however she surrendered her life. As she said " it is people who pause to appreciate life who are happiest" I think she should have paused and enjoyed her life regardless of her tumor. Everyone in this life suffers from something. No one has a perfect life, but everyone must learn to live with this problem no matter how hard it was. On the other hand, even though doctors told her that she have less than a year left that is not a reason for her to escape life. Doctors are not always right, they are human too they make mistakes. Also, every month doctors are discovering a new thing about cancer, so maybe by a couple of months they will discover a treatment. I would never do what Brittany did at least for the sake of my family and the people who loved me. What she did may not affect her that much, but it surely did affect her family and friends.
ReplyDeleteMiracles can happen. On my opinion, this one decided to surround in a very wrong way. A lot of stories proved that the cancer was removed completely from some people bodies safely. Also, she didn't believe that her soul wasn't her own to control the date of dead. The soul is owned by God ( Allah) the Creator of it. I don't agree with what she have done because she had the chance to be in a development world and new , easy treatments. She didn't give herself the hope to be better. In our religion (Islam), the person who decides to kill himself doesn't allow to see the heaven, and our God(Allah) would be too angry. It is simply unforgivable in my religion whatever the reasons were. The person himself cant decide to end his life at all, and must know that all these difficulties are parts of the life's nature. We live in incomplete world, and nothing is perfect. We all must suffer in one way or anther. In addition, in my religion, as much as you are patient as much as you get benefits from the God, and all the benefits will be considered as credits to enter the heaven easily after dying normally. However, some people may disagree with my point of view, but I depend on my religion and facts to set my worlds and my thought, and I believe %100 on what I have said.

I cannot understand Brittany’s decision. I think that she finally chose death because of fear of death. If I were so, then I will do my best for anything until ending my life. In the movie Titanic, the captain chose the death with dignity, and I can fully understand him and respect him. However, in this case, it does not seem as death with dignity. Anyway, I pray for the repose of the deceased.
