Do you like art? If so, what kind of art? If we think about it, we all like art in some shape or form. For some, art is a beautiful oil painting on canvas. To another, art is expressed through dance, while to another, it is expressed through one's fingers as one molds and shapes new objects made with clay. Did you know that written text can also be art? I would like all of you to be artists with the freedom to express yourselves in any way that you would like.
Every Monday morning, I will post a topic on my blog, which you are reading these instructions from. Once you have read my topic, you will need to leave a comment on my page. However, this "comment" should be more than one sentence. It should be your response to the question I am posting on my blog. I would really like to encourage you all to try to write as much as you can. Although I would like for you to write as much as you can, please do not spend more than 30 minutes writing them. If you read a comment from your classmates that you find to be interesting, feel free to comment to them as well! Lets try to make this as interactive via the Internet as possible. Your responses and comments will need to be completed by 8:00 p.m. every Friday. There will be no exception! Therefore, plan on completing this assignment before the Friday deadline in order to ensure that you receive full credit, which will be 10 points for each week.
On a final note, these blogs are intended to be fun and to allow you to further practice writing in English in a variety of avenues. Be adventurous and express yourselves! Although I am primarily looking a lot at the content, I will also be looking upon your grammar as well. Aim for grammatical accuracy. Nonetheless, have fun, and do not forget, all of you are artists!!

I don't feel good with myself about the past eight weeks. I struggled myself to achieve my goals, but it seems like it didn't work. The first time I came here I faced myself alone, it was the first time in my life that I was really by myself. The first two weeks was the hardest, because I was missing my parents and my friends a lot and that situation made me homesick many times. Some days before, I felt like I was okay and ready to move forward, but I became ill and this made me lose many classes. It seems to be like a lot of excuses, but I really went through a bad time here since a left my country. I don't feel that I did my best at all, I know that I have so much more to give. I'm taking care of my health and I'll do my best to achieve my goals in the next eight weeks. I came here with a purpose and I'll show people that I still got it!
ReplyDeleteThat really hurts my heart. However, remember that it is your first time in America and everything will be great very soon. I was struggling every time I moved to another state. Can you imagine that my stuff is still in Virginia and I just took two bags with me looool! Also, I will move to Florida which will be the fourth moving for me. It is too difficult to find good friends as that easy but trust me if you try , you can deal with this . It is the way we learn in America. You need this to strengthen your language and yourself. However, consider me your friend and you can contact me anytime.

In the last eight weeks I was lazy, I didn't do my best. There are things I said I will do in these eight weeks, but everyday I say that I will do it tomorrow until I didn't, which will affect the goals I already set for the next eight weeks. I wish I didn't postponed things. I hope that in the next eight weeks I will be able to do the things I postponed together with the things I need to do in the next eight weeks, or at least finish some of them.
ReplyDeleteBefore I came here, I wrote some ‘Bucket List’ as goals. There are several things like making friends who are from 10 other countries or improving my English until not being cheated when I go trip alone. As the half semester passed, I think I accomplished my these little goals almost half. I made some friends who are from America, China, Japan, Taiwan, Spain, and Kuwait. This means that 4 countries left. I also visited Disney land, Universal Studio, Hollywood, and Santa Monica with my Korean friend by ourselves, and we didn’t being cheated! I don’t think my English is so improved right now. However, I think I have more confident than before. Therefore, I think I’m doing well now, and I will accomplish my goals with other half semester just like this.
ReplyDeleteAs I reflected back on the first eight weeks of the semester, I feel that I did my best. Last semester, I was very lazy in alp classes, and never tried to say my opinions in classes because I had no confidence about my English. However, this semester, I went to classes on time, and could say my opinions at the class! In addition, I used to get too nervous to do well when I had to do presentations in front of classmates. But this semester, I had some chances to talk in front of people, and I overcame my problem to get nervous. Now I feel very confident to speak English. Also, I started taking a Spanish class with American students from this semester. I study very hard at the class, and I enjoy learning with my American classmates. I had never experienced like this before. The professor treats me like one of American students. Therefore, I always feel excited to attend the class. This eight weeks mean a lot to me. I hope I can keep doing well for the second eight week too!
ReplyDelete- I did a lot of thing in the past eight weeks. Also, I achieved most of the thing that I want and I am still working to accomplish my goals. However, am not done from getting what I want in this semester which is getting my university admission and this is the last and important goal for me now. I am trying to find a good university in a good state in America and match my needs and comfort myself. Meantime, I just want to enjoy my life here in California and be happy with my IELTS score which is 6 ,but my happiness will complete when I get the university admission.
ReplyDeleteActually I had composition class last semester; I’ve learned many things about essay and the ways that we have to write our essays. In this semester I’m practicing more to improve my English. I’ve not reached my goals yet. We have other eight week and I must improve my skills in English because I have Toefl and Ielts exam in near future. I have to practice hard to get my score and absolutely our teachers help us to improve.
ReplyDeleteOf course I have reflected back of my first eight weeks. It was also my first eight weeks to study in the United States. This class was not like what I thought before I really had this class. I have learned some knowledge about writing, but the class of complex sentences made me feel I was having a grammar class. I know I have not done my best, so I will try my best to work harder to learn as much writing knowledge as i can.
ReplyDeleteEight weeks passed so fast, I cannot believe that I almost come to the halfway mark of the semester. I should do better to achieve my goals, but sometimes I was too procrastinated. I wish I had chance to do differently. But I still have the second half semester, I will try my best.
ReplyDeleteLast semester, I also took a composition class. At that time, it was very tedious, and I was tired in the class because the teacher made us hard. However, this class is very nice for me. I have never thought that I do not want to go to class. Frequently, I feel my writing skill is not good, so I want to improve the skill through this class.
ReplyDeleteUntil now, I was absent twice because of sick. From now on, I am trying not to skip the class as much as possible to improve my skill.
Half of the semester has gone, I think I have learned many things, I have been to some interesting places, I feel so good, and feel happy to be here. And I also made many friends there, they are so nice. But I don't think I have done my best to achieve the goals I have set initially. Some classes I'm even kind of late. Sometimes I didn't hand in my homework in time. So in next eight weeks, I hope I can do better.
ReplyDeleteI think I achieve a lot in these eight weeks, because I haven't experienced an American class before. So I think I learn more interesting tings in this semester. I do not think I tried my best to study composition last week, because I have five quiz in a week, which makes me be tired and crazy. I hope in next semester I can learn a little harder than before and prepare for my IELTS text well.
ReplyDeleteI have learn some knowledge from this class, such as independent clause, dependent clauses, sentence types, coherence, outline and so on. You use the vivid examples to explain academic words for us and it is easy to know it and memory it. However, I did not learn well in Compound sentences and complex sentences. I need to work hard in it. In the fowling eight weeks, I wish my compositions will have less grammar errors and I can write different sentences to express my ideas.
ReplyDeleteHow time fly! I can not believe that half of fall semester have already past. In the past 8 weeks, I learned a lot about grammars, vocabularies, sentences structure and how to write a essay. That is very useful for me, because I need to prepare the TOFEL test use what I learned. I had a TOFEL test in Cal States Fullerton last week. I don't know the result yet, but I think the score of the TOFEL test is not what I want. I need more hard work on English. For the next 8 weeks I will do more practice of TOFEL test and learn more about grammar and vocabularies. My vocabulary is weak so that I can not understand most part of the reading. Anyway, for a high TOFEL score I must work hard. Come on Winnie.
ReplyDeleteFor the section A, I think I did well but not best. I did not work so hard on my ALP classes but focus on my university class and also the TOEFL test. I wish I could past my TOEFL test, so I can enroll to my program next semester. It is the middle of the semester now, so I need to work harder to achieve my goals. During the section B, I need to spend more time on study, both university class and English classes for a good grade.
ReplyDeleteSince I came, I have been struggling a lot with everything surrounding me: the transportation, my ex-roommate, and my illness. They became all together against me at the beginning of this semester. However, everything has changed when I met my new roommate Ale. We decided to live together near campus and share everything. Also, she has a car so she solved most of my problems. I have achieved my required TOEFL score of 80 to be admitted into a university in FL which was my dream. Thank you for helping me to achieve this and to make me a better student. I feel that I'm ready to start the session B with a big ambitious.

In the last eight weeks, It was the first time for me to do my assignments and exams online. I feel sad even though we have learned a lot. However, I think we need more because I did not achieved my goal which is getting a good score in the Ielts test. In the second half, I wish to write many assays in the class and in the home instead of the free writing in the blog. Furthermore, I want to know how I can organize my thoughts about any topic. Also, I hope to give us new words which help us in the writing. Finally, I would to say "thank you for everything you did it for us".

Before starting the class, I was nervous because I did not expect that turn in the enrollment class paper to each class department. There is a lot of difference with my country’s university so I was so worried about this semester. Thus at the first, my aim is not get a fail in any class in here and have progress in English. As times goes on, however, I am getting used to be in here; therefore, I do not have much trouble in understanding than before. Even though I was adapt myself to CSUF, I think I do not improve my English ability because I have a lot of trouble to speak, write, and understand English. I usually plan to study English by myself in weekend, but it still not fulfilled because I usually take a rest except doing assignment and reading a book. Every time doing wrong in English, I’m embarrassed and feel regression than before. So, from now on, I will be progress than now to study and prepare exam. Of course, I will have a trip to many other places to fun and observation!
ReplyDeleteAt the first 8 weeks, I think I wasn’t doing very well as I expected. However, I did have learned some writing skills and details in this composition class, and it is really helpful for me. After taking this class, I have tried to notice some problems on my writing; therefore, now I can check and fix my writing by myself sometimes, I think this is the biggest change for me. Ultimately, I expect me on the future 8 weeks can improve writing skills more and overcome the TOEFL-iBT writing section.
ReplyDeleteFor the last eight weeks of the semester, I tried to do my best, but I still feel I am not too much enough for English skills like speaking, listening, writing and reading. I know that people who learn a language lately have some disadvantages and I am one of them. Therefore, I don’t need to be disappointed for current me, and I don’t care it. However, I think I need to do it persistently and don’t give it. Everyone, let’s do it for our great future!
